Designing A Multi-Purpose Space At Home

In recent months, many of us have experienced sharing spaces with our families in ways we had not been before. What was once a living room suddenly morphed overnight into a classroom and a home office – or perhaps a classroom and two home offices!

If there is a design trend for 2020 and beyond, it is flexibility. Particularly because we tend to live in more crowded housing because of the cost of living and smaller properties in Hawaii, we need to make the most of square footage by designing multi-purpose residential spaces for maximum flexibility.

KCAA Atherton Preschool Project

It will welcome its first students – keiki as young as two years of age – this fall.

It was over five years ago when WhiteSpace first began discussing the project with Kimo Steinwascher, chairman of the KCAA Board of Trustees, and Christina Cox, KCAA president.

The Atherton Preschool desperately needed more classrooms. Though the non-profit’s budget was extremely tight, the Atherton Preschool did have the space: A derelict, 1940s-era cottage existed on the property, but it was unusable and unsafe.
