Wai‘anae High School’s New Searider Productions’ facility moves towards spring completion
WhiteSpace Architects’ design for the new multi-million-dollar Searider Productions’ media-education center is coming to life.
The new 8,500-square-foot facility is still located on the western side of the Wai‘anae High campus. Two newly designed and constructed buildings will augment the two original buildings that Searider Productions had outgrown long ago.
Architects Laura Ayers, AIA and Elyse Takashige, AIA serve as project leads.
Their vision for the project was a welcoming mini-campus specifically designed for the 21st century needs of the distinct program, while allowing it to remain connected to the larger school.
The design includes a “makerspace” or shop to expand the output for the retail education enterprise, two new classrooms for the early-college program, an office-conference room, new restrooms, covered lanai and a flexible multi-purpose open courtyard that will be used for classes and to host other gatherings. The conference room was designed to take full advantage of stunning ocean views and provide meeting space for all departments of the program to connect and collaborate.
The project broke ground in August 2018. Construction is estimated to take approximately 18 months with a completion date in April 2020.
Established in 1993, Searider Productions is an award-winning educational program that has been recognized as “one of the most innovative digital media programs in the nation” by the Milken Family Foundation. Its mission is to provide students with the skills, attitude and knowledge to succeed both in their local communities and around the world.
“As construction has progressed, it’s been incredibly validating to see the response from Searider students, teachers, advisors and staff,” says Ayers, principal. “We felt confident in the design, but seeing it come to life confirms that the scale is appropriate for the space and the features take advantage of the existing site.”
“Our new facility will serve as the centerpiece for digital media education on the Leeward Coast and across the state of Hawai‘i,” stated John Allen III, video advisor for Searider Productions and a graduate of the program. “We are so excited to see this dream come true.”
A grand opening celebration for the new facility is planned for summer 2020.
